For the ending of my piece, I would like the electronic section discussed in my previous blog to gradually transition into the final atmosphere. This final atmosphere will represent the environment of London. The reason for choosing London is that it is the city where I live, and since the main objective of the project is to explore a sense of place, I feel that ending the composition in a location that is personally meaningful to me will create a stronger connection between the listener and the piece.
The environment of London is very different from the Caribbean soundscape that begins the composition. While the opening section focuses on natural sounds such as wildlife, waves, and wind, London is characterised by the sounds of urban life. Everyday sounds such as traffic, conversations, footsteps, and the movement of people through public spaces create a unique atmosphere that many people associate with the city. By incorporating these sounds into the final section, I hope to create a realistic and recognisable representation of London while also showing the contrast between the different environments explored throughout the piece.
One aspect that I am particularly interested in is recording many of these sounds myself rather than relying entirely on sound libraries. Creating my own recordings will allow me to develop my field recording skills and establish a more personal connection with the composition. Capturing sounds from locations that I regularly visit will make the piece feel more authentic and reflective of my own experiences within the city. It will also demonstrate another area of sound practice beyond synthesiser programming and virtual sound design.
Some of the sounds that I plan to include within the London section are:
- Traffic and passing cars
- People talking and general city ambience
- Wind and light breezes
- Trees rustling in the wind
- Footsteps and movement within public spaces
In conclusion, I believe that ending the composition with the sounds of London will effectively reinforce the project’s theme of place and environment. By combining my own field recordings with the sound design techniques used throughout the piece, I hope to create a meaningful conclusion that reflects both my surroundings and my personal connection to sound.
